Flatfeet is a common deformity which occurs in children. It could show up at birth or years later. Because of this, the condition is common in adults as well. There are two types of flatfeet- symptomatic or asymptomatic. Individuals with symptomatic flatfeet may have limited foot movement or pain.
A diagnosis will be needed to determine the proper treatment route, which would include walking and range of motion observation, how the person stands and sits, and X-rays. In asymptomatic cases, treatment may not be required.
For symptomatic patients, a one or more options may be offered. Custom orthodic devices help with improving function and support the foot’s structure. Shoe modifications can also be recommended, to help provide more support. A temporary change in the amount of children’s activities would assist with problems relating to prolonged walking or standing, which can bring pain. An exercise regimen can provide some relief. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may help reduce pain and inflammation.
If problems still occur, surgery may be recommended to improve foot movement and relieve other symptoms.
