Corns/calluses

Corns and calluses are common skin conditions that can develop on the feet as thick, hardened skin, but have different characteristics. At Southern Podiatry Clinic, we have extensive experience treating patients with corns and calluses.

When skin is constantly rubbed or pressed against, corns and calluses develop. Individuals may notice areas with thicker, rough skin, hard raised bumps, flaky or dry skin, or tenderness or pain under the skin.

Corns are characterized by their relatively smaller size and deeper location compared to calluses. They feature a solid core that is surrounded by swollen skin. Applying pressure to corns can cause discomfort or pain.

Calluses occur usually on common spots such as the heels and ball of the feet. They are larger than corns, but are rarely painful.

when should i get treatment?

Patients with diabetes or other conditions where poor blood flow is present need to seek medical treatment before trying to use at-home remedies due to the increased risk of complications, such as ulcers, developing from an accidental injury.

If the corn or callused is inflamed or painful, it is recommended to make an appointment at one of Southern Podiatry Clinic’s two locations; Ponchatoula or Franklinton, to get treatment.
